Reasons for Forums

From "Moodle for Dummies" pg 159, Reasons for Forums:
  1. engage learners in collaborative projects
  2. enable learners to practice skills not supported in traditional class settings
  3. learners participate in forum discussions more than traditional classroom settings
  4. increase participation factor of a number of reasons:
    1. shyness less of a factor
    2. language barriers less hinderance
    3. peer pressure lessened
    4. overcome communication problems using computers' usability
    5. participants have time to research and think out their answers
Observation: In a OLL/N LE (on-line learning / networked learning experence), any factor that encouages particpation should be encouraged. This actually goes nicely with principle one of the connectivism: diversity of opinion.
